Time To Get Busy

February 8th, 2013

Lawn Treatments

Put out Dimension now to prevent any weed seeds from germinating in your lawn and flower beds. Existing weeds will need to be taken care of with a separate product. Atrazine or Weed Free Zone are the go to chemicals these days. Both will need a spreader sticker to be the most effective. Make sure to hit those ants where it hurts, apply Over and Out to knock out both the young and existing mounds.

Pruning

Prune roses and treat them with fertilizer to promote growth. Apply All Seasons Oil Spray to kill over wintering insects. If you’re worried about any dormant diseases afoot, use Lime Sulfur spray.

It’s not just roses that need a good pruning, trim shade trees now for best results later in the season. Fertilize them with with a time released fertilizer like Growers Special or Ross Fertilizer Stakes.

Spray fruit trees with All Seasons Oil Spray now before they bloom to kill off over-wintering insects.

Apply Lime for Pink Hydrangeas or Sulfur for blue blooms now.

Vegetables

Plant a few tomatoes now. Usually the earlier the better for heirloom varieties like German Johnson or Brandywine because of the absence of pests and diseases.

We now have Onions, Asparagus (New Jersey King all male variety), Horse Radish, Potatoes (Red Lasoda, White Kennibeck, and Yukon Gold), and much more in stock.

A new cucumber variety for this year, the Sweet Success Cucumber is an English type cucumber that is long, sweet, dark green, and seedless.   This is the cucumber made popular on cooking shows and at Whole Foods and Farm Fresh.  Seeds are available at the store or through our online store and plants will be available in March for purchase in store.  Takes only 54 days until harvest.

Purple Martins, Roses, and Lawn Treatments

January 23rd, 2013

A whole new year is upon us and with that means new things.

We have received our annual shipment of Roses. Check out our Rose list for the complete inventory. Lots of new varieties so come in soon because supplies are limited.

Make sure to clean your Purple Martin houses because ours have arrived and that means there are more arriving everyday.  Some simple tips for a good Purple Landlord would be to keep vines and things from around the base of your house. Clear any vines or shrubs from under the houses. Though it is not unheard of for a colony to live with these conditions, they do tend to prefer it. Ideally, you want to make sure your house is atleast 40′ away from any trees or cover that may be able to conceal potential predators like hawks. Kick the house sparrows and starlings out now to ensure you have plenty of room for incoming Martins. If cleaning the house doesn’t send those unwanted tenants out, you can trap them using a sparrow trap.

Finally, growing season is coming quick and now is the time to apply a weed killer. At this point in time, it’s too early for a weed and feed but if you’re having trouble with winter weeds in your yard give Atrizine a try. It takes care of a wide variety of weeds without harming your lawn. If you would like to nip those spring weeds in the bud, apply Turf and Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper. It kills weeds before they sprout.

Just in from the greenhouse, we have put out the first tomato plants of the season. At this point in time, we have Better boy, Big boy, and Celebrity.

Happy Planting!

Strawberry Arrival, Garlic, and Brown Patch 10/1/12

October 1st, 2012

Brown Patch

Fall is officially upon us as wetter weather and cooler breezes have arrived. With that means certain issues with our lawns. Brown patch is running rampant in our city. Be on the look out large patches of dead grass in your yard. Brown patch is a fungus that thrives in cool, moist temperatures and this weather is just about the perfect recipe for it to show up. When dealing with brown patch, we recommend a product called Infuse. One 15 pound bag treats 2500 square feet of active brown patch.

Strawberries

Strawberries will arrive on Wednesday October 3rd. For those who have reserved strawberries this year, we will hold your strawberries for 72 hours. The first variety to arrive will be Camino Real and the second will be Strawberry Festival (we will send out a separate notice for that variety). If you would still like to reserve strawberries, go HERE! Or you can call 225-272-6412.

Prune your roses now for spring blooming. Don’t prune climbers. Fertilize and apply merit for systemic insect control.

November 29th, 2011

Open House

Come by on December 1st from 4-8 for 20% off all items with the exception of red starred items. From 6-8pm bring the kids and even the dog because we will have free pictures with Santa with a canned food donation.

Christmas Trees

Christmas Trees have arrived. This year we will be selling Douglas, Fraser, and Noble firs. We carry the trees here, at the store on Old Hammond at Millerville, or visit the tree lot at 9404 Florida Blvd. across from Monterrey.

Poinsettias

Poinsettias require even moisture to maintain their leaves.  Watch out for water in the saucer or being trapped in the foil wrap.  This excess moisture can rot the roots.

Cold Weather

We have gotten cooler this week. Take care of your temperature sensitive plants by covering them. Make sure when covering plants that the plant has a heat source because plants do not generate heat. The heat source could be the ground or a light source. So make those plants happy and keep them warm.
